Deep within the winding woods and hills of INDEPENDENCE, Kentucky, is Recurrence. Formed in 2008 with the goal of writing catchy melodic death metal and making every live show memorable.
While the band pulls influence from melodic death metal bands such as Dark Tranquillity, Soilwork, The Duskfall, and Amon Amarth, they also incorporate other hardcore and metalcore influences such as Bury Your Dead, Bleeding Through, and God Forbid. Their sound combines a little bit of that ‘something for everyone’ feeling, and includes beautiful melodic guitar riffs, the heaviest of heavy breakdowns, chilling piano and choirs, ‘disco’ synths and folk instruments, and to top it off, a range of vicious vocals from death metal gutturals, hardcore shouting, and even cleanly sung male and female vocals. All of this in turn results in some of the heaviest, happiest, evilest, most melodic metal out there right now.
Recurrence hit the stage in 2011, by hosting their own local metal festival called “MadFest” (named from the legendary Covington venue The Mad Hatter), and has played numerous shows around the United States, and opening for headliners such as Sabaton, Deicide, Korpiklaani, Nightrage, Spineshank, Týr, Evergrey, and The Bunny The Bear.
After accomplishing a self-funded demo and EP in their earlier years, Recurrence set their sights on the forefront of metal with their debut album "The Exit" mixed and mastered by J-F Dagenais (Kataklysm) in JFD Studio in Dallas, Texas and artwork designed by Niklas Sundin (ex-Dark Tranquillity). Many successful singles and fan favorites such as “The 900”, “Sleep”, “Standby”, and “Equilibrium” always had the audience jumping and moshing along with them.
Their sophomore album “Art of Survival” will be released on November 5, 2025 via YYMBR Records. Recurrence once again worked with J-F Dagenais and JFD Studios for mixing and mastering their album, which features an array of talented guest artists such as Björn “Speed” Strid (Soilwork, Night Flight Orchestra), Peter Wichers (ex-Soilwork), Per Nilsson (Scar Symmetry), Sebastian “Seppo” Lindgren (The Duskfall, We Are to Blame), and a Recurrence fan favorite, the incredible voice of singer/songwriter Bec Hollcraft. "We have worked really hard on this album and it really ended up exceeding our expectations” says The Antidote, the vocalist of Recurrence. "We also have a lot of amazing guest features on the album of some really great artists that have influenced us for a long time and it was an honor to be able to work with them!"
After wrapping up their first co-headlining tour in 2024, Recurrence worked with award winning music video producer Scott Hansen of Digital Thunderdome (Meshuggah, Sevendust, A Day To Remember, etc) and Björn Strid in order to prepare some next level music videos for the release of “Art of Survival.”
The first single “Remember Who the Enemy Is” derives its name from the dystopian series The Hunger Games. “We chose this song to be our first single, because we felt it fit the theme of the album perfectly,” explains The Antidote. “As a fan of The Hunger Games franchise, I wanted to have a music video that matched the lyrics of the song and the visuals of the films. Scott and his team at Digital Thunderdome went with our vision and built a whole set from scratch and this video turned out better than we could have ever imagined!”
Art of Survival promises to be a groundbreaking blend of many metal genres, along with crushing breakdowns, electronic elements, and even authentic South American folk instruments performed by Ecuadorian musicians Andrés Villagomez and David Misael Pozo Bastidas. The Antidote emphasizes that “We have something very special and unique with this album and we want to make sure we do all we can for the world to hear it. Although it is a lot darker lyrically and musically than The Exit, the album is still very much inspiring and about overcoming suffering and learning from failures. We pushed ourselves even harder this time around and experimented with new sounds and instruments and we really believe we created something very unique in the world of metal.”
Art of Survival will be released on November 5, 2025 via YYMBR Records is available on Bandcamp, Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, and all digital platforms worldwide.
“Every song, even every riff, should tell a story,” explains The Antidote, “but most importantly, people should want to listen to it again and again and really connect with the music”. Stay tuned as Recurrence prepares to leave a mark in history as THE unstoppable force of metal!
